VENICE SALTS

| INSTALLATION | SAN FRANCISCO, CA |

Although salinity is rarely what defines Venice, its saline lagoons have brought Venice peace, prosperity, war, and destruction. Standing as a sculpture, "Venice Salt" strips Venice of its water, its gondola rides and instead reveals the impact of its salt. Between 1870 and 2018, largely due to climate change, the sea level in Venice has consistently risen by about 2mm per year. The significance of the water levels can be seen on the deteriorating bases of Venetian buildings; salt deposits from the water now penetrate the brick foundation walls above its Istrian stone base, which had historically been its protective barrier. As the salt crystallizes, it corrodes the bricks and eventually turns them into powder. Per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, extreme flooding that used to occur in Venice only once every century is now expected to recur every six years by 2050.

VeniceSalt1.jpg

Sitting atop a dining table, "Venice Salt" brings home the bipolar nature of salt -- a household necessity as well as a city destroyer. Centered on the table are 12 consecutive boxes, each holding salt quantities at 2mm increasing increments to equate the annual rise in sea level in Venice. While the media often over saturate the impact of climate change with remote statistics and quotes, "Venice Salt" aims to make the issue more tangible via the common household condiment. Historically, salt has also etched many stories across the globe. From around 500 AD to 1700 AD, the salt monopoly elevated Venice to great wealth, while in April 1930 the Gandhi-led salt march resulted in India's independence. The lack of available salt to heal wounds during the War of 1812 war between Napoleon and Russia led to the death of Napoleon's troops during their retreat. While the fluidity of water shapes Venice's beauty, the salt within its water is what determines its existence and deterioration. The impact of salt continues, whether as medicine, a destroyer, a commodity, or as a symbol for movement; its next chapter in history maybe one of its most significant.

27 STEPS

| INSTALLATION | SAN FRANCISCO, CA |

27 steps began as a design for the Nelson Mandela memorial. It later resurrected as a traveling pavilion upon being selected as one of the exhibits at the San Francisco Market Street Prototyping Festival (2016). It consists of one single gesture of taking 27 steps through the piece to commemorate Mandela's 27 years in prison at Robben Island. The two pieces form a center void in the shape of an inverted pyramid --Mandela's journey in carving for peace by inverting the political system. Market Street has always been the venue to voice, to protest, to celebrate, to walk for peace. The Market Street fair offers such a opportunity again, not for a protest, but for a walk for peace in a celebratory environment.

PURPLE RAIN

During a peaceful non-apartheid protest in South Africa, just months before Nelson Mandela was released from prison, the police force were determined to arrest anyone who was a part of the protest by tagging them with purple water. The protesters showed resistance by turning the purple water back toward authority and soon after, purple became the sign of resistance.

urban metrics

Motion-sensor-activated LED lights and counter begin to help us understand the patterns and density of Market Street. These counts were also linked to an online database that allowed us and others to track the data in real-time. We would like to further push this concept of using art as an urban metric for any city and add a level of interaction to the streets.

TEAM

For this project, we contacted a number of individuals with varying talents, including architects, sound composer, videographer, fabricators, lighting designer, technologies, interactive designer, and fundraiser.

BOMBAY HOUSE

| BUILT | india |

Just off of the shores of Juhu Beach in Bombay is the compound in which I had spent my childhood. On the property are three identical bungalows, each consisting of 4 flats. They were built in the early to mid 20th century and served as the barracks for the British during WWII, directly adjacent to Juhu Airport.

My family has lived there through multiple generations and will continue to do so in the future. This project is one step in that evolution. This will be a house for 3 generations: the Baby Boomers, Generation Xs, and Millennials.

The future is in health. We see the house as the new clinic. Health starts from the well-being of the occupants. The house can help monitor that health.

As a human, curiosity brings magic into the house. We want to use this opportunity to explore the use of sensors and hands. While the swing sways at the kick of the foot, the doors automatically open and close when certain appliances are used are two people are in two opposing rooms.

FUTURE CITIES

| DESIGN COMPETITION |

As I step out, I recognize this town. I was here in 2016 AD. There are no streets or buildings, the roads are no longer filled with cars like they used to. As I look up, all I can see is a swarm of what look like pods rising over a sea of green parks. The street is the park. Occasional incoming fog obscures my view, but then this is a foggy city, it was and it always will be.

SWARM_VENTURE_01.jpg

The incoming fog settles on the cluster. A large shout from a mobile pod operator distracts me. I see people descending into the street park in random spurts. Rustling sound of the foliage masks their conversations. But I am eager to listen. I lean forward.

I am happy to subscribe to this city, Dorothy. The urban fabric reminds me of Jericho in 9000 BC. We lived in a house that had direct access to the roof, the collection of roofs within the cluster was the street in Jericho. But I like coming down to the park, better now without cars. I agree. The air is cleaner, the environment is greener, her friend responds.

It is spring here. The climate crisis is a thing of the past. Resilient measures taken in 2100 AD to combat climate change are now accepted ways of life. Rising sea level was the primary factor for elevating a cluster. Sea levels are now aligned with levels of 1800 AD but the cluster developments stays put. Subscribers to the city like the altitude.

I am fortunate to be given the right to travel in the spectrum of 9000 BC to 2400 AD. Alignment of economic and technology innovations have reset the course of civilization, expanded the scale, modified human activity patterns and changed settlement typologies.  Architectural manifestos through time have been their business models.

Agriculture was the key economic driver that made Jericho happen in 9000 BC. Rise of civilization fortified towns. Industrialization is the current metropolis. Barter, metal coins, paper money, and credit are the instruments required for living in the spectrum. The shift in economies morphed its currency along the way. Market conditions favor human pollination. A diverse society is in works since trade started between Mohenjo-Daro and Mesopotamia. The spectrum is a variation of economic shifts and human migration. Soft and rigid like clay, cities are formed by external pressures and baked into entities until they melt and become another.

A loud "Hi," pulls me away from my nostalgic thoughts. Abby, a friend who had invited me to visit her, gives me a big hug. Yes, everyone in the future still say hi. Only an invitation can grant you access and subscription to this town. Abby explains a bit more of this foreign concept to me.

Alibaba, the digital market place equals the size of the Grand Bazaar of Constantinople in 1455. The success of Alibaba's subscription business model appeals to city mayors, especially after the financial crisis of 2050 AD. Subscription to a city grants you the rights to live in a city. Citizens are now Subscribers. And if you were a prior subscriber to Alibaba then you get preferred access to it. "I was an early Alibaba subscriber hence I was pre-approved for this cluster, I mean a city," Abby says with pride. Cities are now called clusters. I retort back the question, are the publications of Citizen Kane now called Subscriber Kane? Abby is not amused, we set out to explore.

More people descend into the park. I am ready to leave. Abby hails a mobile pod with few taps on a mobile kiosk. An orange capsule comes to us. Abby decides to travel home in Indian cafe pod. We settle in with our food. This seems convenient I acknowledge to her –retail and restaurants mobile pods are the means of transportation – she nods her head and points me to look out. I feel the climb up.

The mobile pods are iterations of elevators that move horizontal, vertical and sideways. Elisa Otis would have never imagined how her invention could have made possible the cities of the future. I make a mental note to meet her when I go back to 1854 AD. The orange pod moves into the cloud, I finish my rice and curry and gaze out. The parks at the street level looks like a green carpet from my viewpoint. The fog and the green below make me believe the Garden of Eden is exactly as illustrated on the postcard invitation that Abby sent me.

Abby informs me that she has a Tier III subscription, which extends healthcare coverage to visitors. I give her a confused look; she explains further how the subscription works for future cities. Basic tier subscription includes housing, city transportation and access to open spaces. Tier II includes benefits of clean air and energy. Tier III offers you education and healthcare services, visitors included. A six- month subscription is the minimum.Subscription is paid in water credits. Electronic transfer of water credits is the currency of all cities now. Valuation is pegged to desalination plants and reservoirs capacity, the mints and banks of cities. Similar to when paper currency was leveraged against gold reserves in 1800-1900 AD, I quip back. Abby helps me to convert my paper money into water credits electronically. Water credit is the currency for all purchases. The conversion rate seems bit complicated; I decide to not dwell on this.

"What elevation would you like for the bedroom to be at?" Abby asks as we descend from the mobile orange pod. "I need to schedule it soon." My silence is a testament to my ignorance. Apartments in a cluster are modules that are mobile and connect as needed. My apartment currently is three modules, one living room and a kitchen, one bedroom and one bathroom. Each of these modules are independent, I have chosen this configuration for the next two months. After that I lose my bedroom to another subscriber on the south side of the cluster. I save credit in doing this. My bedroom self-detaches and moves towards the location of the new subscriber. Similarly when my bathroom needs repairs it travels to the manufacturing warehouse to get itself fixed. Today I have a choice to detach my bedroom and move it to a higher elevation without additional cost, part of my Alibaba subscription benefit. My mind is trying to grasp the concept. "As high as I can go," I answer back. I think back about how limiting the two-/three- bedroom fixed configurations were back in 1980 AD.

Abby shows me how to adjust the elevation of my bedroom, she settles on the couch for the night. I am excited. I retreat to my room and start the climb. Through my window I see the entire cluster reconfiguring itself. The future city has no form indeed. The fluidity is experienced here more than ever. This is Jericho of 9000 BC, Manhattan of 1950 AD and Alibaba of 2100 AD all happening together. The fog starts clearing up as more of the cluster becomes visible. The reference to mythology is relevant now. Like ancient gods, humans now live on the clouds, descend back to earth every day to experience the Garden of Eden and then retreat back to the cloud. The new subscribers have let go of all the nostalgia of the past, solved climate crisis, and have given back water its true intrinsic value. The fluid form of the city is still changing, but my tired eyes give away. As I drift into another zone in the spectrum I go to sleep remembering an old English expression:

"May you live in interesting times"

BLUE SPA

| DESIGN COMPETITION |

Water is life. Given that most of the human body as well as the Earth's surface is made of water, can water be the treatment in this spa? A 250-foot-long shower corridor links all of the facility's amenities: housing (rest), clay bath (therapy), and pool (swim).

BlueSpa_Board_Page_1A.jpg

Act I
Scene 1. Earth. Primates, Homo Sapiens & Aves (Bird).
Enter WATER

The human body is 70 percent water. The Earth’s surface is 70 percent water. Water is medium for all lives. Water is a link between solar and ground energy; between sun and life; and between built and natural landscape.clay and pool.

Act II
Scene 1. Latvia. The Site.
Enter SUN, TERRA, BIO-WASTE, & WATER

Solar, ground-source heat pump and biofuel are the sources of energy. The climate patterns in Latvia necessitates diverse fuel sources. Water is energy storage - between sun and human body and between sun and ground.

Act III
Scene 1. Blue Spa. House, Clay & Pool.
Enter WATER

The tree house for visitors and staff allows the biodiversity at grade to thrive in its natural setting; clay and pool are outdoor rooms grounded in its environment. water is the constant element between housing (rest), clay (treatment), and pool (swim) and the connector between the three built elements. The 260-foot long tank is a water corridor: shower, steam and sauna. Heated and cooled water is treated and recirculated through its length. In the summer, the water stores excess solar heat to recharge the ground source heat pump.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

| AN IDEA |

The stock exchange has been a barometer of economy and progress for the last few hundred years. Hidden behind the ups and downs of the stock price are the stories of human progress and failures. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Steve Jobs have used the capitalism model to advance human society. However, the capital distribution remains a barrier, the problems of high disparity has resulted in deep social crisis. We have all agreed to resolve the issue in this century. Perhaps an equal distribution of knowledge may solve the unequal distribution of capital.

Library as institutions have been the venues to go to for knowledge. At the great Alexandria library in 3rd century BC and in Francois Mitterrand's The National Bibliotheque of the 20th century, the main protagonist was and is the book, in paper and in bits. The program of the library has not changed much from then until now. A linear function of a library acting as a missionary of knowledge may not serve the new millennia well. The old program of a library is relevant for solo readers. But the new world operates in groups. What and where is the new waterhole for knowledge?

st. louis

We look back to commerce in the New York Stock Exchange which was formed under a tree, to democracy in ancient Greek agora, and to justice in the court hearings performed in Indian durbar. The stock exchange was a new typology and so were the agoras and the durbar. They all served the need of the time. Likewise, we need to rethink our institutions. We believe in Churchill’s words, “We shape our buildings, and afterwards, our buildings shape us.”

knowledge exchange

A knowledge exchange building is a place for a dialogue, the focus shifts to the seeker, the books and bits are the props. It is a building where books, digital servers and a town hall co-exist together in a park. Between two knowledge sources is a forum setting which allows learning by sharing and a place to protest, contest, agree. This is a place to collaborate, to use new resources, build partnerships, charter a new course for progress. Sited in cities left behind by the market economy, these exchange buildings provide free tools to compete and claim its share of the capital. The building is the new venture, the knowledge seekers are its capital.

knowledge exchange submission_white_Page_10.jpg

St Louis is where we seek to build the Knowledge Exchange. City air make you free as they used to say in medieval Germany, so we ask- can St Louis free itself of its issues of economic disparity, population loss and crime? We introspect, a Knowledge Exchange may help the coming together of discussions, differences and communities.

knowledge exchange_Page_05.jpg

As architects, we often look onto our buildings as an extension of an ideology we believe in. We are excited about the Knowledge Exchange and we urge you to get involved in this mission. Our objective of creating a change is aligned with the vision of the words of Mr. Barrack Obama, "I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to create change — but in yours." As an advisory member of our team we will seek your guidance, hope and wisdom. We cannot do this alone, so we thank you in advance for your participation.

As they say, “If you build it, they will come”.

A TURNING POINT

| M PAVILION EVENT PROPOSAL | MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA |

As an extension to OMA's MPavilion, A Turning Point installation asks visitors to become caretakers of Melbourne. As the theater seating pivots toward the city, our installation reciprocates and surveillance videos from Melbourne's public spaces and parks are projected onto several sheets of fabric -- each pixel is a live stream of a heart in motion. This thought can be seen as an extension of the City of Melbourne’s Safe City Cameras Program (SCCP). The event is Melbourne in Motion. Our times calls for civic participation, observation, and confrontation. We start now.

ATurningPoint_Page_1.jpg

surveillance

The intent is not to promote or celebrate the act of spying, nor it to promote a constant anxiety of fear. To the contrary, the repertoire  is of a new reality of the 21st century. A few guards of the past are now being replaced by an entire community of citizens ready to engage the challenges of a diverse, multi cultural city. The caretakers tweet their observation to #ATurningPoint. A new paradigm, maybe a new prodigy of security in a democracy, one in which we learn to accept and celebrate surveillance as an act for the people, to the people, and by the people.

ATurningPoint_Page_2.jpg

the pivot

The installation consists of two frames, one of which is stationary and the one that pivots (the screen). The footage from surveillance cameras around Melbourne would be projected onto the layers of the screens. As the seats of MPavilion pivots, so does the screen --turning the focus from the interior of MPavilion to the larger Melbourne.
